Here’s what happened in the lead up to the big day...
...Before any big event it always helps to advertise it, so this means posters to be designed, printed & put up at various locations.
Meet the team that do all the hard work for us. Reprographics designers Kate Baxter & Hazel Hamblin. It’s always a pleasure to see their smiling faces, and they never complain when I go in with yet another design change! Booklets & Participation Certificates, also designed by the reprographics team at Portishead.
Next phase is to get all the items ready for production and printing. Let’s take a look behind the scenes, to where it all happens. Meet the boys and girls from the Print shop floor, Suzie, Dave and Tim Whitchurch. I can assure you it gets very noisy in there once the machines are in full production, working flat out to meet the deadlines. You would not believe the massive pallets of paper, and completed work that are boxed, stacked up, and ready to be distributed.
Somehow we have to pay for all this work, so Sponsorship & Advertising is needed.
This involves a lot of leg work, and quite a lot of rejections. However you do meet some really nice people in your travels, and find lots of interesting places you would not have known about otherwise. I never knew Thornbury had so many interesting shops, and restaurants.
La Bruschetta is a must! This authentic Italian Ristorante has a wonderful cosy ambiance. Luigi and his staff are friendly, and the food is superb!

Now this is where the really hard work begins!
Meet The Set up Team: Alison Harding 2nd Dan ; Neal Harding; Geoff White; Master Chris White; Zoe White Director & 3rd Dan ; Ian Pugh; Sandra Pugh.
Theirs is a thankless task as nobody sees the hard work and long hours they put in the night before the Competition. They mark out Arenas, put out signs, sort out the PA system, Organise and display the trophies.
On the day itself they Input data with results of the Winners on the computer.
(Competition Categories are sorted out prior to the event, and Competition forms are sent to Outside Clubs and First aid cover arranged for the event.)
I stopped taking photographs at this point, and decided it would be better to start helping out a little!
It’s Shattering just watching the Set up Team at work! The amount of time and effort
they put in, especially with the late night finish before the competition is amazing. It doesn’t finish there….they then get up early the next day to put out the trophies before we arrive!
Also Continuing to help out with tasks the next day during the Competition e.g Judging, and scoring. Most of the Black Belts & Cho Dan Bo’s know long and tiring that can be!
And finally when everyone else has left they clear up afterwards.
(So I hope you won’t mind if I remind you to use the bins provided for your rubbish, or better still, take it home?)
All the hard work doesn’t stop there…..You’ll find that there’s more going on than you realise. I think you’ll be surprised at just what your Black Belts do!
