Congratulations to all our New Black Belts: Olivia Read; Taylor Coghlan; Rosie Barnett; Carys Weeds; Alex Moorefield & George Phillips.
A well deserved salute goes to Kelvin Buckner; Luke Moorefield; Liz Moriarty & Matt Moriarty on obtaining their 2nd Dans. You all worked exceptionally hard.
Master White started off proceedings on what he called a negative note, reminding everyone about etiquette, and respect to Masters and Senior Dan Grades. It is an integral and very important part if our art. The Courtesy of bowing shows respect. Even if the Masters are deep in conversation, bow and show your respect, it won’t go unnoticed!
It really was an excellent standard of grading from all participants. Some of the younger Cho Dan Bo’s had a bit of “a wobble” doubting their abilities when they had a bit of a brain block on the one steps…it happens, especially when the panel are sneaky and make you miss every other number. It’s only a small thing, but it makes you think. Just believe in yourself. First thing to remember is to keep breathing, as Master Ward says it is the answer to eternal life! Take a couple of deep breaths to settle the nerves, and refocus. You know you can do it, you did it all at the pre-test! Not only that, someone will always be there to help you if you get really stuck.
The combinations were awesome, even Sah Bum Nim Rossiter had to think on a couple of them, and that’s saying something… personally I think she was enjoying herself far too much, and just wanted to do them again! With everything that was thrown at them, everyone coped very well, digging in and getting through it. The Masters reiterated not to let standards slip. We know you get tired - but remember the basics in regard to chambering hands, and try not to short cut techniques. Attention to detail is important as you go higher up the ranks, as others will copy your bad habits if you don’t correct them!
Sah Bum Nim Rossiter also stated to exaggerate stances, it’s the only way they’ll look good. Really show off your techniques – slow them down a bit so people can really see them. Respect to all of you – it really was a pleasure to watch you all!
