Leukaemia Research Forget Me Not Walk - 3rd October 2009

Wet and Wild best describes the day- and that includes the walkers…what a mad bunch! It may have been dull, grey and overcast but that did not diminish the spirit of the people who took part in the 5K Walk on the Bristol Downs on Saturday 3rd October.

This wide, open expanse of land has quite a few trees lining the avenues and roads that cross the downs. They provided some protection against the elements, and are absolutely breathtaking on a gorgeous autumn morning with the leaves turning a lovely russet colour. To keep warm some of us were doing running on the spot, and star jumps, whilst waiting for the walkers to arrive at our outpost – it did raise a few strange looks from passengers passing by on the buses....and it didn’t help wearing a day-glow tabard!

The Marshals did a sterling job, bringing up the rear of the crowd. It really was a great sight to see lots of red Balloons bobbing along the horizon, being held by the participants. The atmosphere was helped along by a random selection of songs being played over the PA system…and what should blast out over the airwaves as the first participants crossed over the finish line but the theme from “Rocky”- Well done Master White, couldn’t have been better timed if you’d planned it! As you can see from the pictures, especially the flag at finish line, just what a blustery day it was! Respects and admiration to those who braved it out, and raised money for such a worthwhile cause. Feel free to visit their website www.forgetmenotwalks.com

Special Thanks to Master White who at very short notice stepped in and set up the DTSD Pa System, and helped out at the event. (He was rewarded with tea and cakes!) It was also great to see Karen Windsor (Roberts) along with her husband Martin, who has recently returned from Iraq, as they made a special trip down from Oxford to support Jo in this event. Jo has recently been made Chair-person for the Leukaemia Research branch in Bristol.

It would be wonderful if DTSD could support a charity each year, and raise money as well as have some fun. If you are all up for the challenge I have a few ideas …watch this space!
